Mike Tyson scored crushing KO win over late WBC champion star who holds unique record

Scoring a laundry list of memorable wins and devastating knockouts in the ring during his career, one of Mike Tyson’s early career victories has aged quite well.

Competing a staggering 27 times before being afforded a chance to fight for world championship gold, when the opportunity presented itself, Mike Tyson nabbed it with both thunderous hands.

Taking on a late WBC champion, the defending gold holder would complete a quirky feat with his 1986 clash with the unbeaten Tyson.

Mike Tyson toppled Trevor Berbick to win first world championship

Battling with the defending holder, the late Trevor Berbick in a WBC heavyweight title affair billed as Judgement Day, Tyson scored the chance to fight for gold for the very first time in his career.

And pitted against Berbick — Tyson helped the former set a rather unique record, with the former becoming the only fighter in history to take on the New Yorker, as well as Larry Holmes and the late Muhammad Ali — whom he defeated in 1981.

Twice dropping Berbick throughout their pairing, which only lasted a pair of rounds, Tyson’s hellacious left hook left the champion reeling on the canvas. Two attempts to return to his feet proved to be in vain as Tyson became the youngest world champion in boxing history.

Mike Tyson missed out on another massive boxing record

Becoming the youngest world champion at just 20 years of age, Tyson was unable to conquer another record at the heavyweight limit set by another forgotten name in the sport.

In 1987, Tyson returned against Tony Tucker in a clash billed as The Ultimate — to determine a new undisputed champion at the heavyweight limit.

Snatching the IBF and WBA championship, WBC kingpin Tyson became the undisputed gold holder. But missed out on a record to become the youngest undisputed champion.

That accolade goes to the late Hall of Fame inductee Floyd Patterson, who scooped all belts in the three-belt era with his fifth round KO win over Archie Moore at just 21 years and 331 days of age.
